On the side of one of the mountains that encircle and overlook the valley that is Grahamstown, is a very large - a mammoth - photocopying machine, or so it looks. It's an architectural monstrosity known as the 1820 Settlers Monument - a huge building that was constructed in the 1970s; and it shows. Square. From the two pointless mast-like structures protruding from its roof, you get a weak hint that its architect meant for the building to symbolise a sailing ship - to be an ode to the…

Last night I was fortunate enough to attend a Flux Trends presentation, by Dion Chang, at the I-Store headquarters in Sandton. The presentation was started off with a startling statement by Dion, "the millennial will change jobs 29 times in his/her career, working out to a new job every 18 months."
The presentation provided valuable insights for companies who are either dealing with the different mindsets their young employees have or are bracing themselves for the next generation…

Above you will see the most common words used in advertising boy’s toys. Scary stuff, no wonder world peace is never an option. I have friends that won't let their kids play with a gun, what nerds I thought. My view has now radically changed.…

Kris van Assche’s S/S 2012 collection stays true to his simple but edgy reputation with his deconstructive suits details, mixing knitwear with tailored suits. High-water pants continue to be hot for S/S 2012, with no sign of departing in the near future. His simple palette of greys and whites keeps a tight focus on all the fantastic details of each piece.…
ContinueBack to Nature Nudes —Nude-as-naked nails look refreshingly demure, yet provocative. Make sure your polish comes in a high-gloss formula so you don't end up looking like you have mannequin hands.

In early prophesising, I declared superior knowledge of “how you know a boy loves you”. (Yes, sometimes giving you his last Rolo is simply not enough.) And so now you find he’s beginning to grow on you quite nicely too…
Of course, as a general rule of thumb, especially in the initial stages (“best foot forward, butt-sniffing stage, still wearing my sexy undies”), honesty is best.
Things are moving along rather swimmingly with your…

Gaetan Schmid is a very funny man. Belgian born, but Cape Town based for a dozen years, he arrives every festival with a new fantastic original offering. Three years I discovered him in "The Dog's Bollocks" - an ingeniously funny one-hander, delivered in mock lecture format, on the hillarity of the bizarre spelling and expressions of the English language, from an outsider's pespective. Last year he brought "Rump Steak", where on a one square metre black and white tiled stage, in a…

Whether it’s something exhilarating and dangerous like hang-gliding off a really high cliff or a bold food choice, you may find yourself more spontaneous away from home. Spontaneity breathes new life into your everyday routine, opening doors and giving you a chance to meet new people and find a new hobby.…

The 2011 Grahamstown National ArtsFest is now in it's 5th day. Almost the halfway point; and I still haven't attended a single Thinkfest lecture, dipped into the film festival, seen any stand-up, gone to a dance perforrmance, done any serious plays or been to any art exhibitions except the Arts Lounge where my sister and I performed today. So I'm a tad panicked. Which is why after this I'm going for cocktails. It happens every half way point festival Monday - the initial panic of "so much…

Last week I was invited to a magnificent POND'S Launch at the One & Only Hotel in Cape Town. We were taken through the history of Pond's and then shown the new Age Miracle Range. They had organised a facial demonstration at the One & Only Spa, where a therapist showed us how to apply and use this new anti-ageing range…

At least once a week all over the world married people and serious couples get an invitation to a private location. This location changes at random. It is a very well kept secret and they can smell a fraud a mile away, that is why no one has been able to infiltrate these meetings, and only now 40 years later suspicions are confirmed.
These meetings have only one goal “how to save the single people”.
There are many of these underground groups all over…

Last night, all the creative convergence, rhythmic coalescence and symmetrical synergy that fest has come to symbolise for me, came together at our band's opening festival gig - our SunshiP trio, now also with sax, electric violin and acoustic guitar. The other three had never played together, and only two of them had ever previously performed with us a long time ago. But we came together and cooked! They were moments of jubilant, thoughtless, total presence - with very gracious musicians…
