Ah Tattoos

There are so many tattoo studios in Johannesburg that it becomes difficult to choose one that will do your tattoo the way you want it and in the style you want it. The best advice I could give is to simply ask people in the street who have great tattoos where they got them. Anyone with ink will gladly talk about it. We adore talking about our tattoos and anyone with decent pieces will happily chat about the artist who did the work.

I have had a lot of work done at a variety of artists and studios, mostly in Jozi. I can happily say that all my skin art has been handled professionally and beautifully, in my less than humble opinion. My favourites are without doubt the boys from Golden Tiki tattoos in Linden. The artists there are Ryan Bolton, Jan Giebelmann and Sean Perrins. The art they do compliments each other perfectly.

Ryan is known for his mad colour and comic book styling

Jan for his old school boldness and outrageous shading

and 

Sean for his beautiful fine lines

These are my opinions and perhaps they think they are better at other things, but that is the way I see it.

What I need from a tattoo artist is the following things:

-

• They need to be able to Tattoo well, that is a given
• Hygiene needs to be a vital cog in the machine that is their parlour.
• They must have the time to discuss my prospective tattoo, what it will look like, where it will be and if it will work
• They must feel free to tell me its going to be rubbish and will not look good
• Prices should be reasonable 
• After care should be discussed
• a friendly atmosphere helps too
