I was just treated to a brilliant weekend at the De Hoek Country Hotel which is situated in the magnificent Magaliesberg mountain area, a mere hour's drive from Johannesburg. Surrounded by the gorgeous sandstone, oregon pine, handcrafted mahogany furniture and fabulous fabrics that make up this serene country manor, I felt privileged and pampered as I guiltlessly indulged in all the alluring luxury...after the relentless pace of the city, a bit of relaxation accompanied by crystal and silver (and perhaps a chandelier or two thrown in for good measure) is certainly good for the soul.

Inspired by the archery at the 2012 Olympics in London, I was delighted that it was on offer, so adopting my best Robin Hood stance, I shot a few arrows in the general direction of the target, to the noisy consternation of the neighbouring monkeys, and was handed a gin and tonic for my efforts by a passing waiter. Quite civilised, you might agree; but if you aren't actively inclined and prefer a reclining position, the spa treatments on offer by the La Cigale team are sublime: the treatment room comfortably accommodates a couple for a deeply relaxing body massage, an invigorating body scrub or a sleep-inducing pedicure...

The attentive service and excellent cuisine has earned De Hoek's popularity amongst foodies. Swiss-trained chef – Michael Holenstein and his team - create five course dinners which are a feast for all the senses. Michael is also a member of the Magalies Slow Food movement, promoting local excellence amongst food producers and restaurants in the area. I can't think of a more delightful way to spoil someone you love...midweek madness is not only wicked, it's sometimes necessary.
