Men's Brit Rock Hair Trend For 2011/2012

The “Brit Rock” hairstyle is worn with swagger -the hair is swept forwards and adds a fringe that is suitable for men that have everything from straight to curly hair. It's not necessarily British, nor is it the domain of rockers, but it certianly is trendy. The “Brit rock” hair style is all about length on the top, as well as the texture that is created by slicing, chipping, razoring and deep point cutting.

British bands and British fashion labels such as Burberry Prorsum have popularised this hairstyle to the extent that if you took the musicians out of the equation, you would have an autumn/spring 2011/2012 Burberry hairstyle.

Versions of the Brit Rock that Burberry have made popular:

A Indie hairstyle for men with curly hair, the short sides prevent the hair cut from making the head look large. The perfect interpretation!

In the image below is the Do (left) and the Don’t (right). The left has been said to be a “Do” because it shows clean cut sides against a purposefully dishevelled top. The right is a “Don’t” because it is way too neat, too school boy and devoid of any attitude. To rephrase, in order to nail the modern men’s fringe, it is best to avoid the straight, side swept fringe in order to ensure that it is worn with plenty of texture.

Take note: the men’s fringe shouldn’t be worn with a wet finish in 2011/2012. A healthy shine is fine, but a wet look is not.

Tips on how to 'Rock' the Brit look:

If the “Brit rock” hairstyle is the one for you and you want to make it your own, then you should know that it takes the right haircut and the right products. Below is a guide from Melbourne hairstylist Annika.

The hair cut

For most men, the length and cut of their existing hair style isn’t going to be suited for the “Brit rock” hairstyle – you might be able to experiment with it, but in order to get it perfect it is going to take a long trip to the hairdresser/ hair stylist. Below are tips on how you get the haircut.

Understand what you want

There is more than one way to interpret the slick, messy, short, neat, rugged, relaxed hairstyle. The two elements that should be considered in advance is the length of the fringe that you want and whether or not you want the neat interpretation of the style.

Styling it: the hair products to use.

1.For texture without a shine

If the dry look is calling you and you want plenty of texture then use a sea salt spray as your base product-this will add a dry texture to your hair as well as support for movement. To get the most out of it, wash your hair, spray in the sea salt and then dry it into your hair with a hair dryer-just make sure that you have shaped you hair into the desired look that you want. Once this is done, use a clay hair product to set the style. Rub the clay across your hands to melt it and make it pliable, then rub both hands through your hair from left to right, starting at the crown and working towards the fringe. The hand movements ensures that every part of your hair has product on it, once you have worked through it, start styling your hair into the final shape that you wish to create, arranging your fringe (which is ultimately the focus of the hairstyle) as desired. If you would like to increase the amount of separation and texture, then use the tips of your fingers.

Product suggestions: Label M sea salt spray and Sebastian Craft Clay.

2. For texture with a shine

Wash your hair and then towel dry it. If you have fine hair and need volume, then work through a volumiser / booster cream. Dry and shape your hair with a hair dryer. Once you have done this, use a styling cream to set and define style. If you are after a low shine then a styling cream is fine. If you want a higher shine, mix a splash of styling oil with the styling cream in your palm and mix it together. Rub the styling cream (a modern, low shine gel) across your hands and then rub both hands through your hair from left to right, again starting at the crown and working toward the fringe. Then start styling your hair into the desired shape that you wish to create, arranging your fringe as desired. If you would like to increase the amount of separation and texture then use the tips of your fingers. Product suggestions: American Crew firm hold styling cream for a strong hole or American Crew’s forming cream for a medium hold. The key to all products is that you choose ones that will emphasise the texture of your hair.
