For 2012 there is definitely a unique undertone of a modernist style appearing, but take some of the most iconic styles of the 20th century, infuse them with quality, and you’ll find the basis for this years dominant styles.
For fashion stylists in 2012, hair is all about revivals and evolution. 2011 is being re-born with regards to styles and colours, whereas cuts are offering revised and luxurious revivals of styles that sit impeccably with the year’s clothing trends.

2012 LONG HAIRSTYLES

LONG AND BOUNCY

At D&G's farewell show, the hypnotically bright collection was glued together with free flowing, blow dried hair. This look is described as an elegant blow-out. The bouncy blow dry gives long hair a groomed, sophisticated and relaxed finish. Inspired in part by the 70’s fashion revival, but working across most of

2012′s styling.

HOMEMADE CURLS

Prada’s homemade curls: Both sentimental and modern, this girlish and individualistic hairstyle features many elements of other 2012 hairstyle trends. It has a side parting, hair tucked behind the ear, soft curls at the back and obvious product definition. Indulgent and eye-catching, “homemade curls” give off a slender and sleek flow as one of 2012′s long hairstyle trends.

FRENCH TWIST

Dolce & Gabbana’s holiday French twist makes it known that classic fashion revivals define 2012. It should come as no surprise that classic hairstyles become a part of defining the year of 2012! Furthermore, the "French twist hairstyle" inspired by Sophia Loren is glamorous and when paired with feminine silhouettes, you most certainly have a winner!. Remember that the season for this style is best for spring / summer 2012. This hot and happening hairdo is anticipated as being 2012's most sultry summer look.

LOOPED UNDER PONYTAIL

Elegant and fresh, one can make a slick center part with a looped-under ponytail for one of spring's classiest up dos.  As seen on the runway of Carolina Herrera, this style was kept perfectly tidy, except for a few loose strands and of course some teased volume which added authenticity. It is a style that can be worn for absolutely any occasion- it can be hippie or casual or even just plain glamorous, but pair it with this looped-under ponytail and it becomes an elegant look of stunning proportions.

HALF UP BRIGITTE BARDOT HAIR

Hairstyles have always dipped in and out of fashion, while others are so classy that they never seem to go out of date. This style is one that is often associated with the likes of Brigitte Bardot: a half up bouffant hairstyle which is drawn from the 1960’s iconic category, where desired hairstyles were seductive, voluminous and entirely “sex kitten”.

As the perfect 2011 hairstyle stayed, it most certainly will dominate the charts again in 2012 as the sixties fashion revival continues its rise to supremacy. This style can be adapted and varied year after year, therefore one well worth mastering. The style will work on hair shoulder length or longer; the longer the hair, the fuller and more glamorous you can make this particular style.

WOMEN'S ROCKABILLY HAIRSTYLE

Taking its signal from the enduring love for classic Americana, the rockabilly hairstyles makes its presence again in 2012, but for both men and women. Initially as a men’s hair trend, it has now become a women’s too.  Seldom subtle, but best worn rough and ready as on Proenza Schouler’s catwalk.

SIDE PINNED WAVES

To add to 2012’s hairstyling collection, another variation was spotted on the runway at Sonia Rykiel. This style sees the '40s collide with the '70s, in her spring 2012 collection.  Just as the sunshine yellow carpet graced the catwalk, it also reflected the crispness of vanilla-hued clothes. But the main place was given to the Parisian-styled hair that injected overdue positivity to fashion shows in Paris.
You would have noticed an ongoing theme in “2012’s hairstyles”: plenty of flowing waves and blow dries. Sonia Rykiel gave us a new approach to a “curled hair” blow-dry, one that translates itself to being classic and glamorously chic. The featured “side part” here isn’t incidental: it’s a deliberate feature used to draw attention. The part is swept tidily across and secured with a hair barrette or pin, adding a youthful touch.
Redken’s Creative Consultant, Guido, gets the inspiration from the ever-so-bubbly designer. He states that “Inspired by Sonia herself – this season the look is a little 1940s meets 1970s, very flirty and pretty. The style is a healthy, bouncy blow-dry”.

2012 MID-LENGTH HAIRSTYLES

RETRO FAUX BOB

In 2012 hair gets wet, it gets retro, it flows free and it gets pinned up tight. The eras influencing fashion have much to answer for with regards to hair: the 20s and 30s gave us bobs and finger waves, the 70s and 80s gave us the kinds of glamour that come from blow dryers and tubes of gel respectively, the 50s rises to rockabilly heights and the 1960s has the most to answer for of it all.

The trend towards the “60s fashion” gave us everything from Bardot bouffant bed hair to mod androgynous crops, as well as having it bring back a unique opportunity to do a structured, pristine, ‘done’ style that defies effortlessness and still hits a trend note. It’s perfect, vintage and modern. On the runway at Jil Sander spring 2012 this sculpted faux bob, inspired by the ’50s and ’60s, was a significant part of the sophisticated yet easy aesthetic.

WET LOOK CHIGNON

Bottega Veneta created a harmonious interplay of colours, textures and fabrics on their spring 2012 runway, and contrasted it with a low-key hair and makeup affair. The optimistic chiffon dresses and leather-suede combo skirts balanced out the untidy, wet chignon. This style is extremely versatile with the idea of creating a wet look and a feel of relaxation.

PILED UP AND PINNED HAIRSTYLE

If there’s a middle ground between being stylish and careless, this is the hairstyle. It doesn’t require precision or complex tools, so get your bobby pins ready! Simple to create and suitable for any occasion, this hairstyle does require a little finesse to pull off that undone-done look of effortless chic, but the result is a stunning style with a textured and messy look.

CHIGNON WITH SIDE WAVES

The chignon proves useful in every situation. It’s that elegantly simple idea that first took hold in the ancient cultures and has persevered through the changing fashion of the eras. Your perception of the chignon might be that it’s for formal occasions; or perhaps that it’s the effortless thing you fall back on when time is short but an up do is required. That’s the beauty of this stunning and ever-useful style: it will never fail you!
But as seasons change and fresh twists on ideas sweep through in the burst of fashion weeks, new ways to reinvent the dependable chignon are searched for. In this take, it’s given a sweeping side part with soft waves on one side; a style that gives one look from the front, another from the back.

DOUBLE FRENCH TWIST

Trending hairstyles for 2012 range from neat and elegant to the absolutely messy, but wherever they sit on the above mentioned fields, the only real must, is that they’re chic, evocative, and fun to create.
On the spring 2012 runway of Diane von Furstenberg, models emerged with a back-combed crown that swirled back into two mirrored French twists. A 1960s style bouffant hairstyle that tops any outfit with a graceful antiquated vibe.

2012 SHORT HAIRSTYLES

MOD BOB

Even though fashion is always progressing towards the future, the coming year is all about anything but that. So much so, that it’s the perfect year for those of us who are sentimental and cannot stop dreaming of tradition, and an equally perfect year for those want to follow fashion designers whose creative minds draw inspiration from the years past.

Although there are undoubtedly other decades of influence, one of the biggest 2012 fashion trends that are defining the year is the 1960s fashion revival. First plenty of runway shows with the sixties-makeover and then the London look that presented us with a modern Swinging Sixties muse. With many fashion accessories also taking inspiration from the sixties, it was almost certain that women’s hairstyles would quickly get on board with the evolving trend. And now we are faced with the return of the Mod-bob, a 1960s inspired hairstyle short on length but heavy on bobby pins.

AFRO HAIR

If your hair type tends to be thick, textured, corkscrew curls then 2011 is the perfect time to embrace them; and enhance them. Forget the hair straighteners and chemical treatments.  If there’s one message that Vivienne Mok shows us in her beautiful shoot, is that a volumed, textured afro hairstyle doesn’t have to be supplemented with accessories, but can work just as well with soft chiffons and lace.

Model Myriam Averlant’s halo of bushy spirals are faded through with caramel highlights for an even more striking effect; a perfect colour variation to try for summer 2011 and one that will carry through easily to the cooler months of 2012 as well.

ROCK CROP HAIRCUT

Lanvin popularising the pixie crop is for autumn/winter and spring/summer 2012 and isn’t disappearing from haircut trends. Although it is being adapted, we are seeing the pixie crop stray from the 1920’s fashion revival into several different styles: There are the 60s and 70s crops, there’ll be the 20s crop and for 2012, there’s the rock crop. The rock crop is a short haircut for those who like the very short fringe and the rockabilly hairstyle takes on a neutral edge in 2012’s seasonal catwalks.

ALL LENGTHS

WOMEN'S SIDE PART

If you want to pull off a 60s or 70s vibe in 2012 and the center is where your hair sits, if you want a part that offers a more fashionable vibe, then your 2012 hairstyle is looking for the side part. You can wear it left, right, up, down, wet, dry, when you’re in rush or taking your time. It doesn’t matter how you wear it, but what does matter in 2012 is that if you’ve got the hair to suit the styles, you move your hair part to the side.

WET LOOK HAIR

Whether it’s slick or quickly textured, flowing free or tied up high. A variety of styles across the spring 2012 runways had one thing in common - they all had a wet-look finish. With oils, sea-sprays and gels dominating the runways it would be wrong to not count in the wet look on the list for 2012. This style can be worn anyhow, anywhere, night or day, spring or summer, autumn or winter, it is that flexible!

CENTER PART

Hairstyle trends often have more than one element to them, and this is the case with the center part in 2012. Suited to all hair colours, the center part aligns itself with two of 2012’s renewal trends ‘60s fashion and ‘70s fashion for spring/summer 2012.
