Scarlett Johansson’s Marilyn Turn

Platinum curls and bright lips is what made is start to wonder if Marilyn is back. Unfortunately not in person, but in spirit…always. In a new and striking campaign for Dolce & Gabbana’s classic cream lipstick, Scarlett Johansson takes after Marilyn. The campaign was unveiled in 2009 and in an interview, Johansson talked about the similarities between her and the world renowned icon, “I’ve always loved her, but the comparison is probably aesthetic—I’m kind of a signature blond, I’m curvy, I’ve embraced my femininity and my sexuality. But I certainly don’t have that lifestyle. We’ve lived in different times and come from different places. She was from the middle of nowhere. I’m from Manhattan!”

Diamond Bras Are a Girl’s Best Friend

Victoria’s Secret uncovered its $2 million diamond-studded fantasy bra in 2010. The Brazilian model, Adriana Lima was the lucky one to wear this stunning bra, complete with long gloves and a satin dress; she had everything that an actress and singer could want, except for a top of course.

Lindsay Lohan’s Inner Marilyn

In 2008, LiLo famously re-enacted Marilyn’s “The Last Sitting” for New York magazine, the shoot was a re-creation of Bert Stern’s June 1962 series of an intoxicated Marilyn nude at the Hotel Bel-Air. While the evident pain in those shots made for haunting, gorgeous shots, Marilyn tragically died just six weeks later. When Lohan was asked if she worried she might meet a similar fate, the young actress was annoyed. “I don’t know… But I sure as hell wouldn’t let it happen to me,” she told Amanda Fortini. “Still, one wonders whether Lohan’s participation in this project, given all the spooky parallels, isn’t the photographic equivalent of moving into a haunted house,” Fortini wrote.

The $5.6 Million Dress

The final price for Marilyn’s white halter dress was "totally crazy, especially in this recession stated a collector." The iconic dress Marilyn famously wore in The Seven Year Itch, while standing over a subway grate, went for $5.6 million at an auction in L.A earlier in 2011. Three other outfits went for $2.7 million combined. And just last month, the green velour dress she wore while singing “I'm Gonna File My Claim” in River of No Return went for $500,000 at an auction in China.

Banksy’s Close Call with Marilyn

The indefinable street artist, Banksy, who gained worldwide fame for his guerilla tactics and his curious anonymity was almost out of action in London because of Marilyn. In 2008, an exclusive gallery and bar showed a Warhol-versus-Banksy exhibit that compared Warhol’s famous Marilyn silkscreens to Banksy’s Kate Moss stencils. Around midnight, just outside the exhibit, closed-circuit cameras caught a grainy image of a man in a baseball cap stenciling Marilyn on a panel in the road. The media would have had a frenzy if he did not manage to slip away.

Gaga Monroe

It’s almost as if a pop singer cannot go through her career without channeling Marilyn at some point. Lady Gaga invoked Marilyn’s breathy birthday tribute to President John F. Kennedy in October, when she crooned for President Bill Clinton. At a celebration marking the 10th year of the William J. Clinton Foundation-as well as a belated birthday for the former president-Lady Gaga emerged from a white tree house with platinum blond hair and the high-impact red lips Marilyn made legendary.

Dine With Marilyn

Many 1950s-themed diners across the country devote signature dishes and Marilyn-inspired décor to the icon. Whether the attendants are fashioned like Marilyn, or the food is named after Marilyn, it seems like every state has one of these. Of course, the theme isn’t limited to the United States: The Marilyn Monroe Restaurant in Buenos Aires, Argentina, offers “international” Marilyn cuisine.

Megan Fox’s Marilyn Tattoo

The sex symbol, Megan Fox, known for her role in the Transformers movies, had an intricate tattoo of Marilyn’s face on her inner forearm for years. The 25-year-old actress had a change of heart when she realized that it wasn’t candy coating for the troubled star. "It is a negative character, as she suffered from personality disorders and was bipolar. I do not want to attract this kind of negative energy in my life," Fox told the Italian magazine Amica.

Marilyn Still Sells Perfume

“What do I wear to bed? Why Chanel No. 5, of course,” Marilyn famously once said. That tiny statement and endorsement is still heightening the brand. A few months ago, Charlize Theron associated with Marilyn (as well as Grace Kelly and Marlene Dietrich) when Dior unveiled its ad for J’adore, a new fragrance. “It was incredibly glamorous and fantastic,” Theron said of her chance to go back in time. “I don’t think I’ll experience something like that again in my lifetime.”

Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale

Britney Spears networks Marilyn in her current European tour for her album Femme Fatale. In this tour, she wears ivory skirts that blow up from the wind, just like Marilyn’s famous scene in The Seven Year Itch. Spears didn’t take the role too much further though, opting for a quick outfit change.

The Androgynous Marilyn

In a photo shoot called “Marilyn off Duty,” the uncanny asexual male model Andrej Pejic directed Marilyn, through posing for the latest issue of Lovecat magazine with the use of various Marilyn poses: the hair, the makeup, the scarf on the head.

Country Marilyn

At this year’s Teen Choice Awards, Taylor Swift went straight for the Marilyn look. There was no controlling the inner Marilyn or styling herself after the icon; the situation was that of a straight copycat. Swift wore a white halter dress by Rafael Cennamo, Neil Lane jewels, and Fendi footwear.

The Power of Wind

One of the lessons from this year’s Fashion Week street style was the “power of wind”, Sometimes Marilyn’s influence just sneaks its way in. Between shows, long, flowing skirts dramatically blew up and out with every gust of wind. The women, and the designers, seemed to channel Marilyn and the image of the subway-grate pose that has been branded throughout the years.
