Jacqueline Kennedy wore a full-skirted dress by New York designer Ann Lowe when she married John F Kennedy at Hammersmith Farm in Newport, Rhode Island, in September 1953. She completed her look with little white gloves and a full veil. Kennedy went on to become President of the United States. He was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, in November 1963. Jacqueline then married Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis in 1968, becoming known as Jackie O.

The dress that Grace Kelly wore for her April 19 1956 wedding to Prince Rainier was designed by MGM costume designer Helen Rose and was made from 25 yards of silk taffeta, antique rose-point lace and pearls by three dozen seamstresses, who worked on it for six weeks.

In 1952, when Elizabeth Taylor married her second husband – English actor Michael Wilding – divorce was not as accepted as it is today. As such, she wore a demure, three-quarter sleeve, ballerina-length dress with a matching jacket for the London ceremony rather than a traditional white dress. Wilding and Taylor were married for almost five years and had two sons – Michael and Christopher – together.

For her March 1969 wedding to John Lennon, Yoko Ono wore a white mini dress – accessorised with a sun hat and over-sized sunglasses. Zsa Zsa Gabor cuttingly described the couple as looking like “two people going to hold up a bank".

Diana, Princess of Wales, wore a dress designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel for her July 1981 wedding to Prince Charles. Her gown's 25-foot train is the longest in royal wedding history. Charles and Diana were divorced in 1996 and, in August 1997, she was tragically killed in a car crash.

Ten years after meeting at university, Kate Middleton married Prince William at Westminster Abbey on April 29 2011, becoming HRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Throughout their six-month engagement, the designer of Kate's wedding gown was kept a secret, leading to intense global speculation. The designer was finally revealed as Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton - but not until the final moment when Kate was making her entrance into the Abbey.

It was every little – and big - girl’s dream: Cinderella had a magical fairy godmother to transform her into a princess for one night to meet the man of her dreams. While Cinders’ ice blue gown wasn’t her wedding dress per se, we all know that the dress certainly helped to get her to her wedding day.
