Historically, uniforms have always had a major importance in religion, especially in the Catholic Church, where each clergy member’s uniform symbolizes their significance within the church” – Kristen Bateman

Runways and stores around the world have looked onto religion and holy attire for inspiration for a new trend that will run straight through into the coming winter months. One of the biggest trends in the first days Fashion Weeks across the globe were hoods and high collars. Today’s designers have incorporated them into snug dresses, asymmetrical leather jackets and even cat suits and “onesies”, and they have a distinct clerical vibe.

Clerical inspiration has been seen in fashion and interior since the early 1930’s. It was in the 1930’s that the designer Valentina dressed famous clientele such as Greta Garbo and Katherine Hepburn in nun inspired looks – and the trend has continued to grow throughout the ages, and is now becoming a fast growing trend for the chillier months.

This new madness for monochromatic accessories and clothing has become increasingly popular, with celebrities showing off all black and all white attire.  The trend has gone a step further and can be seen in the accessories and interior industries too, including rosary beads, or at least jewelry resembling rosary beads.

Religious uniforms can be seen as items of inspiration both literally and conceptually throughout fashion history. Traditional vestments may be out-dated, but designers have found ways to make the details of these original garments modern for both men and women of all ages.
