Interview with Thaya from Beatnik Bazaar

After a week's hiatus from this weekly series I am back with a fab interview for you today... This time it's the turn of Thaya from Beatnik Bazaar! In the past year Thaya has moved from the quirky suburbs of the South Peninsula of Cape Town to the serene country scene of Stanford, just past Hermanus. She blogs about her life as a mom, a retail store and coffee shop owner, a small village dweller - and a music, fashion and design enthusiast. She loves locally hand crafted goods, vintage bicycles, retro ceramics and furniture. Her shop is inspired by the non-conformist lifestyle of the beatnik generation and has appeared in numerous national and international magazines. Read on for more insights into her life and loves....

"What I.... "

Know

That life is far too short for shit coffee, margarine and anything low-fat. That a life that you aint lovin' is no life at all. That doing what you love is the key to happiness, and perhaps madness. That switching off your TV and adventuring through life is the only way to do it. That people who drink sweet sparkling wine are dodgy. That living and loving with all your heart might scare some people, but will attract the ones you need. Eat real butter, have cream with your apple pie and take swims at midnight.

Love

I love being submerged in water. I love my quirky, interesting son. I love music made with soul, like Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin - don't make 'em like they used to, huh? Cooking feasts for friends. I love gin and tonics on my stoep. Forests and mountains. Anything old and beautiful. Piano's. Log fires in winter. Fig preserve and cheese. Espresso. Strawberries, cream and meringues. Friends who play an instrument and sing while I'm cooking. Discovering new places in South Africa. Birds of prey. Stanford. Vintage bicycles. Playing vinyls. Botanical prints. Vegetable gardens. The river.

Read

Milan Kundera; Murakami; Aldous Huxley; Salman Rushdie; William Burroughs; Tom Robbins...

Want

To buy this house I'm in. A new Macbook. Every vintage film on my lust-have list. A better camera. A vintage car. A projector. A vintage camera collection. A bountiful vegetable garden. A Danish 1950's sofa. Egg chairs. A Crosley portable record player. To take my son around the world, from Paris to Switzerland, from Asia to South America.
