For the first review of 2012 I am breaking my rules, slightly. JoziReview is supposed to be all Jozi all the time.

-

EP may seem very strange. Burial is from London and his new EP is dedicated to New York. I find it very difficult to listen to Street Halo and not think of Jozi. There are only 3 tracks which all clock in at over 6:20 which suits me fine, I like slow burning songs.

The first track Street Halo breaks most of my rules for music I tend to enjoy, the first one being the high pitched House vocal swiftly followed by the deep techno bass. If you had told me a song contained those two ingredients, I would not even bother listening to it. Burial makes me do strange things though, his understated and beautiful album Untrue took me to deep dark dub places and I am willing to listen to what he does with an open mind.

The overall feeling for this music is it is Jozi's late night driving home after a night of partying and a night of passion in a strange bed with a beautiful partner. Seriously, its that sexy, I can see the dirty streets, the slow awakening of the sun and sure even the lights making street halo's.

NYC and Stolen Dog bring back the slow subtle music of Burials past, they are beautiful and the dischord takes your mind to its very synapses and tests them. The visuals these songs create in my mind are of that feeling you have after the night you had in Street Halo, you are with friends in a post-hangover haze and all is god with the city.

So then this album, made by a Englishman, created as a tribute to NYC for me represents our gorgeous city Johannesburg.
