What you should know about Pigmentation

Age spots, sun spots, dark spots – pigmentation surfaces in all shapes and sizes for a variety of different reasons. But what causes discolouration of the skin, and more importantly, what can be done to effectively treat and prevent it?

Pigmentation means colouring. The colour of your skin is determined by its melanin. Special skin cells produce melanin, and when these cells are damaged, it affects melanin production. How does one damage these skin cells? Cell deterioration can occur naturally – hormones, genes and pregnancy contribute to pigmentation. However, excessive exposure to the sun is a big culprit when it comes to skin damage.

Sunlight is made up of two types of harmful rays: long wave ultraviolet A (UVA) and short wave ultraviolet B (UVB). UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis, the skin’s thickest layer. UV rays stimulate melanocytes to produce melanin. This leads to the darkening of the skin for a highly-sought out tan, but also harms the skin and can lead to marks, spots and scars.

The simple answer is: avoid the sun. However, that may be easier said than done. If you will be spending extended time outside, sufficient sun protection is essential.
