The Italian super-brand illy Coffee celebrates their collaboration with three brilliant international artists. South Africa's very own William Kentridge, Neapolitan contemporary artist Francesco Clemente and Bombay sculptor Anish Kapoor. They each give their unique interpretation of illy-a coffee which blends the best arabica beans the world has to offer. These creations form part of the illy Limited Edition Art Collectables.
William Kentridge
The plate and cup interact with each other in a subtle play of mirrors : static images on the plate come to life on the mirrored surface of the cup, depending on the proximity to the plate and the angle of view. "The principle is to draw by looking in the mirror, and not to the drawing surface." William Kentridge.
Francesco Clemente
The new cups by Clemente represent his passion and unique visual style, which is rooted in his attitude to life and a hobby to explore the world and new cultures. The brand describes his art as “a spontaneous moment that disrupts a rule,” since each of the pieces he creates has a surprising ‘explosive’ element, and he didn’t break this rule working on a new set for illy. The cups by the artist feature colorful water colour blasts, and the saucers have red letters in the middle.
Anish Kapoor
Anish Kapoor responded by leaving the exterior untouched but silvering the interior, and adding a hole in the center of the saucer. If you place the saucer atop the cup, the way you would a tapas napkin, you have what illy calls "an interactive, sensory experience meant to delight and surprise." But really, it's sort of like a mini smokestack for a steaming cuppa.
