A close friend of mine gave me a pair of slippers as a gift the other day.  She loves to give thoughtful gifts - slippers you may ask? These slippers are handmade and there is a tag on them that has a hand written note from the person that made them, her name is Mariana White.  I don’t know anything about her but the fact that she wrote her name on this pair of slippers shows a sense of pride.  My grandmother lived in a small village in Cyprus, her husband died when her five kids were very young, so she with the help of the whole village raised her children.  There were 13 grandchildren in my mom’s family.  My gran was a simple person and I would always see her crochet at hand.  So one day I must have been 16, I asked her “ when are you going to finish this bed cover?”.  She got up slowly and opened the cupboard where she showed me her stack of neatly folded crochet bed spreads, she turned to me and said, “ I will be finished when I have completed a blanket for each grandchild, so that all my grandkids have a piece of my love. I can’t give you kids a lot, but I can give you a piece of my heart”.

These slippers have heart.  It is a small company named “Flock, ladies of the Karoo”, there is no web site but a simple telephone no:0828961828 and I just thought, if someone should read this and needs a pair of slippers, get a pair of these , it will mean a lot to somebody out there in the Karoo.

Mel, this post is so moving, especially the part about your grandmother. You have reminded me of the love that my grandmother (Yia Yia) gave us through her food. Thanks for sharing such an awesome post.

My sister, the tears are streaming down my face, I remember exactly where she was sitting when she said that, like it was yesterday. She was the most beautiful lady in the whole world! Must be cause she was also a Melpo. Now let me go and re apply my make up,

Tears on a Thursday Afternoon. Thanks Melpo for a brilliant post. Very Often we tend to forget about "Our People" that have walked this earth and lived this life, Way before we did. There are certain People that teach us Life's Simple Lessons which mean so much. The Lesson is How To Love.

Below are some of the lyrics from Jessie J "Price Tag", which highlight what I'm trying to say

Seems like everybody's got a price,
I wonder how they sleep at night.
When the sale comes first,
And the truth comes second,
Just stop, for a minute and
Smile

Why is everybody so serious
Acting so damn mysterious
Got your shades on your eyes
And your heels so high
That you can't even have a good time
We need to take it back in time,
When music made us all unite
And it wasn't low blows and video hoes,
Am I the only one getting tired
Why is everybody so obsessed
Money can't buy us happiness
Can we all slow down and enjoy right now
Guarantee we'll be feeling Alright.

nicolas you hit the nail on the head, whatever thought begins in my head,( before it turns into a story) I always land up at the same conclusion, love is all we need, and what does the human race do .........the opposite- we fear!  Gandhi said "Be the change you want to see in the world"... lets try what do we have to lose.

Beautiful and heartwarming blog, very uplifting, it all begins with love.........faith rather than fear.

If I have brought a smile to your face, it means we have already made a difference.xxx
