In a sea of the same, standing out is in order especially when consumers are swamped with buying options. The compact crossover segment is particularly a hotly contested one. Within this segment are many vehicles that are average and only some that are special. This is obviously only my opinion but what really counts are sales!

Suzuki has had a sales success with their Vitara Brezza. That’s right – since its launch in February 2021, the fun little family SUV has sold over 600 000 units abroad, giving the Brezza almost a quarter slice of the market share.

An interesting side note about the Brezza is that Suzuki has formed a sales agreement with Toyota. Suzuki is white labelling the Brezza for Toyota, who then rebadges the vehicle – the Urban Cruiser. Despite that fact that this will eat into the Brezza’s sales, with Toyota having the larger market share it also speaks volumes about the quality of the product Suzuki are selling. The only differences are the badges and price. The Brezza has a slight price advantage over the Urban Cruiser.

So, what is it like?

“Simple” is a good word to describe the Brezza. Now, do not think that is a bad thing. It is a car that offers all –that –you –need and is practical, fairly priced and reliable. Part of its charm is its ease of ownership or simplicity – low running and maintenance costs. Being simple also means that there are less things to break down and more reason to keep going and going… for may reliable kilometres.

Aesthetically, the Brezza has square lines that are highlighted by its front lights that are finished with a chrome brow and LED daytime running lights, which are light guides on the GL and pure LEDs on the GLX to go with the automatic projector main LED headlamps.

The Brezza in profile also shows off its floating roof design. All models, regardless of their colour, have a darkened A-pillar (the pillar the holds the windscreen up) and a black insert on the C-pillar (the pillar that holds the back windscreen up) to create a visual break between the body and the roof. This is particularly striking when you opt for any of the two-tone colour options available to GLX owners.

The interior light package is part of the special GLX-trim, which includes silver highlights around the door handles, the touch screen and the steering wheel hub. The GLX model also adds a centre armrest for the front occupants and a pushbutton starter that works in combination with this model’s standard keyless entry system. In addition to these luxuries, the top of two glove boxes is air conditioned on the GLX specification level, allowing the occupants to cool their drinks and snacks while driving.

Both the GL and GLX ride on 16” wheels, but in the case of the more luxurious GLX, the wheel width grows from 205 mm to 215 mm. The GL is fitted with steel wheels with silver wheel caps and the GLX is fitted with diamond-cut and polished alloy wheels as standard.

Safety is nicely taken care of with a four-star crash rating from the Global NCAP crash test. Unfortunately, only a two-star rating for child occupant protection through.

The Brezza is driven via a highly popular K15B engine that also serves in models such as the Jimny, Ertiga and Ciaz. 77 kW at 6 000 rpm and 138 Nm of torque at 4 400 rpm. Power is delivered to the front wheels via a five-speed manual or new four-speed automatic transmission.

It is all neat and tidy. Light and easy, like a sweet Brezza.
