The trendiness that Cape Town has been anointed with has always been associated with the Buitenkracht side of town. When one thinks of Muizenberg, one thinks of the long, pale beach and houses huddled against the wind. However, pools of creativity lie here, sparkling in the sun............

Enter the Sobeit Studio. Age-old rivals Form and Function meet here in cordial harmony, patting each other on the back in the form of skull-shaped and Cupie Doll candles, flamingo side tables and generally outrageous mirrors, jewellery and other beautiful, useful products.

As you ascend into this hall of art deco wonder it becomes immediately apparent that creativity flourishes here.

This treasure workshop is owned and run by Bartel van Vuuren and Liezle Fourie, an innovative twosome who are responsible for the pieces produced at the studio in Muizenberg and displayed in their gallery.

According to Bartel and Liezle, “We create decor, objects de’art and jewellery to die for. Already well known for our “looking glass” mirror range incorporating cool little toy animals and our supercool candle range, we also create wondrous interiors filled with custom creations. Our style is highly adaptable and versatile yet distinctly our own. We move with trends but do not subscribe or hold back. Oh…and we love our things.”

Aladdin’s Cave does not go unshared. There are studio spaces here rented out to fellow artistic folk: a photographer, graphic designer, a jeweller  a fashion designer, a fabric designer and an illustrator. This adds to the “studio” atmosphere and gives the space a dynamic, inventive feel.

Sobeit Studio was responsible for the exquisite mannequins and rails in the new Suzanne Heyns store in Melrose Arch. They have created that magical, yet trendy, feel in the store that resonates in all of Sobeit Studio’s projects.

The Studio is well worth a visit and certainly merits a drive (a pretty drive at that) away from the traditional Waterfront and Camps Bay hotspots. And if you cannot get it together and make your way over there, then, well, sobeit.

Visit them online at www.sobeitstudio.com, call them on 021 788 9007, or go see them at 51 Main Road, Muizenberg, Cape Town.
