The look and feel of smokey eyes has always been a favourite look for women all over the world. Sexy, defined and beautiful is what brings these coulours to the forefront of many different techniques, looks and styles. For the Jill Stuart Fall 2012 Fashion show, we were shown a beauty look that features the smokey eye with an essence of soft colour and a twist of natural and real. Makeup artist for Jill Stuart cosmetics, Diane Kendal is the woman behind this intriguing look. Staying true to the look, Kendal featured the royal colour of purple on the eyes that really looks amazing. Furthermore, when it comes to loving this look, flexibility is the name of the game – with a few tweaks here and there, you can have the options of wearing it grungy or girly.

How to: worn-in smokey lilac make up

Face

This look has a very natural and flawless aspect to it. For flawless looking skin

  1. Start off by washing your face well and then apply moisturizer all round (moisturizing your skin does a lot of wonders: it keeps your skin healthy and serves as a primer for your make up, allowing it to stay on longer, which is what we are all searching for.)
  2. After you have moisturized your face, apply foundation – this will create the desired flawless look. If you generally have that flawless skin, then you can choose to use a tinted moisturizer. If you are one to use foundation then apply it evenly and make sure that you don’t overdo it! If there are areas that need special attention, feel free to use a concealer. Remember: To set your foundation or tinted moisturizer, apply with a loose or compact powder using a puff or a brush.

Eyebrows

If you desire definition to the eyebrow area, use short strokes with your eye shadow.

Remember: The eyebrows for this look are not that strong, so only fill in the areas needed.

Eyes

Using an eye liner, line your upper and lower lashes and then gently smudge the eye liner by making use of a small eye shadow brush. This is the beginning of your smokey look.

Next, you will need two shades of eye shadow. The first is a lighter purple lilac shade and the second is a darker blueish-lilac shade. Take the purple lilac eye shadow and apply it all over your lid until it passes the crease of your eye. Take a blending brush and then start blending it upwards towards your eyebrow to get that dark to light effect.

Now take the darker lilac eye shadow and apply it on the lower part of your lid until its just below the crease of your eye. Take your blending brush again and start blending the line using small circular strokes. This creates contrast and a really smoked look on your eyes.

Take the dark lilac eye shadow again and apply it on your lower lash line. Make sure you apply more eye shadow on the outer corner of your eye and lessen it as your move towards the inner corner of your eyes. This completes the lilac smokey eyes and makes your eyes stand out even more.

Finish off your smokey eyes with a good amount of mascara.  Remember: Don’t forget to curl your lashes too.

Contour

Using a good blush brush, apply bronzer right above your jawline to contour your cheeks. With a highlighter or a light powder, highlight the bridge of your nose, under your eyes and on top of your brows to create the desired dimension.

Lips

The main focus of this look is your eyes, so there is no need for strong lips. You can use a tint or lip gloss in a light shade of pink to compliment the lilac eye shadow.

Now you are set and ready to go, you can pair this look with grungy post party hair just like what was seen on the runway or a simple and clean ponytail if you want a more girly look. You can also wear it with soft waves! This is a very flexible look, so feel free to experiment!
