The Fondation Louis Vuitton: Exhibition Icons of Modern Art

The Fondation Louis Vuitton presents the exhibition "Icons of Modern Art - The Shchukin Collection" from October 22, 2016

From October 22, 2016 to February 20, 2017, the Fondation Louis Vuitton feature an exhibition that pays tribute to one of the greatest art patrons of the early 20th century, Sergei Shchukin, the visionary Russian collector of French modern art, whose collection “remains little know to the general western public even today” states Anne Baldassari, curator of the exhibition. “In fact, since it was broken up in 1948 it has never been gathered as a singular and coherent artistic entity”, continues Baldassari.

Thanks to the generous contribution of the Hermitage Museum and the Pushkin Museum, the exhibition presents a significant ensemble of 130 major pieces of French modern art in dialogue with 30 works of Russian avant-garde art. Throughout his life  Shchukin collected works by impressionists, post-impressionists and modern masters including Monet, Cézanne, Gauguin, Rousseau, Derain, Matisse, Picasso, Degas, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec and Van Gogh.
