The beloved and iconic Stanley Beer Yard from 44 Stanley, Milpark, has undergone a major makeover- a fusion of Americana in terms of the décor, the food and music; there's edge, there's vibe, it's a blend of what Joburgers like to do- listen to music, talk, eat, drink- and the space is perfect- split level, with a choice of being inside or outside.
Calexico is actually a city on the border of California and Mexico- so the mélange of different styles is apt. There's a retro vinyl wall, with a classic record player where patrons can play their choice of legend music (at certain times)- how about a little Springsteen, the Eagles....Miles Davis anyone?
...complete with death mask mural by talented artist, Stefan Smit.
And what about the food? Stanley Beer Yard was known for great food and that continues with a new menu, designed by chef and food stylist Robyn Timson-Moss. who has done a take on classic Californian-style fare, with gorgeous ingredients like artichokes, nachos, hot brisket and racks of ribs.
Co-owners Larry Hodes and Michael Vacy-Lyle are excited: “The new restaurant will be an eclectic mix of Americana style food, décor and music – staying true to the nature of Stanley beer Yard, but with a shinier and edgier feel”.
And isn't this combo of diversity a true reflection of the melting pot that is our city?- but I say, with a cooler twist.
