Smartwatch Fashion: The New Trend On The Catwalk

Wearable technologies have been out on the market since early 1980s, with the release of Seiko’s Pulsar NL C01 watch that is able to store 24 digits with a user-programmable memory. Today’s watches continue to excel in performance and design as more wristwatch manufacturers, as well as mobile companies, are venturing on providing timepieces that can run most of the features of smartphones and tablets we have today. But, apart from functionality, smartwatches are now becoming more than an accessory for the handset, but more of an ornament to our wardrobe as many fashion designers are now moving to this trend and introduce us with their own fashionable watches.

Designers’ take on wearables
Recent news on the fashion tech world was revolving around Hewlett-Packard’s newly launched smartwatch that is now available at Gilt Groupe. In August, we get the first teased on this device, and only after four months, they’ve finally unveiled their fashion-focused modern timepiece. It was given more buzz since HP partnered with fashion designer Michael Bastian. The gear looks similar to a traditional timepiece, yet it has the functionality of most smartwatches such as deliver email, updates on the stock market, information on the calendar, text and call notifications, updates on sports and more. It is also water-resistant and has a battery life that can last up to one week. The HP smartwatch is controlled by an application that can be accessed through its paired handset (iOS or Android). However, it doesn’t have OLED screen and heart rate sensor like some of the top smart wristwatches today. This will appear mostly to those who enjoyed the functions of the Pebble watches. It is offered for $349 while the limited edition made of alligator strap and sapphire-glass crystal has a price tag of $649.

However, there are some watches today that offer us with “beautiful design and craftsmanship” such as the MB&F’ The Legacy Machine Number 1. It was launched in 2011 with a starting price of over $77,000. Despite its monstrous price tag, the design of this timepiece is not something to throw away. The machinery employed in this accessory is closest to a steampunk. When viewed on the side, you’ll notice its dome like glass with all its gears and machinery working. It integrated the world’s first vertical power reserve indicator that provides a 3D visual counterpoint from its glass’s arches.

Current contenders on the market
Top mobile manufacturers are no longer busy in producing smartphones and tablets alone, as they are also seen venturing on wearable devices through their own smart wristwatches and headpiece technologies. Modern timepieces are now able to perform similar basic functions as its paired handset by giving its users a quick access to their notifications, while other smartwatches can run as a standalone device that can make and receive calls and texts including connecting to its own data connection through its SIM card. These gadgets also feature sleek designs from its customized screen to the interchangeable straps that fits for any occasion (formal, casual, or outdoor).

Apart from watches, we also have headpieces that provide us a futuristic look on mobile technologies. Although the Oculus Rift may have provided us a first look on augmented reality through wearables, it is the Google Glass that is a true gamechanger. The design wasn’t bulky compared to the former, and can be worn comfortably outdoors. It also has great features such as the hands-free photo and video taking, head-tracking navigation, voice command features with over 50 applications to install and enjoy. However, the device is currently being scrutinized for its limited storage and expensive price tag. But, we think the device was successful in providing us a look of how we view the future back in the 90s.

Based on a study by Gartner, it is expected that 50% of people worldwide will consider getting a smartwatch over a smartband due to its functionality, compact design, and portability. Apart from mere design, we should also take in consideration the features of these devices before purchasing one. What’s your desired fashionable wristwatch to get next year?
