Everyone who invests in their skincare should have heard about the benefits of micro-needling- in short, it reduces wrinkles and fine lines; it improves scars, reduces the appearance of stretch marks and stimulates collagen production. The procedure involves using fine needles to create tiny puncture wounds on the top layer of the skin which causes the body to go into healing mode, resulting in cell turnover and increased collagen and elastin production.

Now whether you choose to do this at home with a hand held dermaroller, or at your dermatologist or aesthetician is up to you and your budget, but I would advocate that you go to a specialist first, so that you can be advised according to your specific needs.

I visited Sonette Donker at Skin ID to experience the next generation of micro-needling- The EPN-(Electroporation Needle System) which combines automatic needling with electrporation- this is an electric pulse. I had my skin analysed first- (via Skin Solutionist app) and Sonette explained that the advantage of having a skin analysis is that it determines how intensive your treatment is going to be- everyone’s skin is different.

A topical local anaesthetic is used to numb the skin- it works in about 10 minutes- and then after it is removed, the treatment starts. A very specific serum is used for this treatment which not only delivers 51 active ingredients into the skin, but also acts as a conducting gel for the current. This Hyaluronic Acid Skin Refining Solution is an intensive dermal stimulant with a biomimetic peptide complex, multivitamins and amino acids.

I experienced slight discomfort on the bony areas like the forehead, but otherwise it was a relatively short time frame and not painful at all. A soothing balm was applied and then a breathable foundation (Oxygenetix) to cover any redness. This is definitely a lunchtime procedure- there is hardly any downtime. My skin felt a bit sunburned and tight that evening, but by the next day the redness had subsided.

So the benefits are seen in about 4 weeks, but for optimal results, 4-6 treatments are needed at 3-4 weekly intervals. On day 5, my skin certainly looked smooth and radiant- there was a bit of peeling before, which is good. All-in-all, it’s a really good investment if you are serious about maintaining skin health and want to improve texture, elasticity and product efficacy. It’s great for all types of skins.
