In Conversation with Dr Erich Schulte

I have just attended a breakfast hosted by Futurethis, exclusive distributors of QMS Medicosmetics in South Africa, at the fabulous boutique hotel, Marion on Nicol in Hurlingham. The occasion was to meet Dr. Erich Schulte, the acclaimed aesthetic surgeon and founder of QMS. It was my second meeting with the formidable and charming doctor, as I was fortunate enough to have interviewed him yesterday, with the opportunity to ask him whatever I pleased regarding skin regeneration and rejuvenation.

I have been using the products for almost eight months now, so I am a fan simply because the results are great. But there are no promises of a miracle cure for ageing; this is the most compelling thing about Dr Schulte, the no-bullshit factor. "We have to accept that we all age," he says," that is a fact and we can't reverse it. But we can certainly succeed in making the skin look its best. That, in addition to good diet, low alcohol consumption, daily exercise and sun protection can certainly make the aging process better."

The products work scientifically, using revolutionary transportation techniques in order to attain skin regeneration. The signature Classic Set is an anti-aging facial system which features three unique products that work in synergy: the Exfoliant fluid is a safe, gentle product which micro-peels the skin, facilitating a deeper penetration of the subsequently applied skin-soluble collagen (Day and Night Collagen) which effectively raises the moisture levels of the skin and improves its elasticity. There are many other products in the range which target different areas according to different needs.

I asked him what he thought about injectables, like Botox and Restylane:

"They are wonderful if used correctly by a medical practitioner. They target certain areas of the face, so in conjunction with QMS products, you will have a pleasing result. But I am not in favour of Botox parties...that is irresponsible."

He's also concerned about our skin cancer stats, which have taken over the number one spot (previously held by Australia) worldwide. Watch this space for the smart sun protection product which will be launched later this year.

A latest exciting breakthrough in anti-aging? "Skin technology is getting better, just like any other technology....the iphone, for instance, is far better than the first cellphone you ever had. So, there is a product that I have created, Ion Skin Equaliser, that is the next generation in rejuvenating skincare. Active ingredient molecules are transported into the deeper layers of the skin via a micro-current technology. This results in a less lined skin."

The QMS philosophy is "not making promises that you can't deliver. Let's be realistic." Other than that, he thinks people should embrace aging in a graceful way; above all, enjoy life, that's what it's all about. "Everything in moderation... I really enjoy a glass of Sauvignon Blanc," he chuckles.

Well, cheers to that.
