People have always said knowledge is power. So we all go to school and learn Languages to communicate; Geography to know where we are; Maths to calculate how much we have and how much we still want; and History so that we don’t make the same mistakes twice.
I would like to focus on the History class. We memorise dates, names, reasons for the battles, who are the victors and who are the victims. The reason for war is always the same-Land, Religion and Power. Even if we don’t get great marks for our History paper, the one thing that is for sure, is that there is no honour in killing anyone in the name of anything. I would be curious to see the final history test scores of Bush, Mugabe, Nixon, Hitler, Stalin, Mao Zedong....
The first war ever recorded was 2700 B.C between Sumer(in modern Iraq) and Elam (a region that is now part of Iran). It is now 2011 and it has been 4021 years since that first war. So my fellow Historians what have we learned thus far...that’s right NOTHING. We all have something to say after the fact. The truth is we want to be led, yet we choose the wrong leaders. I say let’s not choose the charming man that has the gift of words, let’s not choose the leader that dictates his ideas and refuses to listen to his people. Let us choose a leader that cares about his people first and public relations later; let us choose a leader whose actions speak louder than his words; let this leader not want to eat until all his people are fed; let him not seek shelter until his people have warm beds to sleep in.
History repeats itself because of our predictable reaction to the same situation. For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction, so let’s ask ourselves this one simple question “What am I doing in this moment that will impact my world and change it for tomorrow?”.
What if I told you to try just one thing -THINK before you act against another, let us lead each other to our promised land and let the politicians argue at the back of the line.
