The Story:

In January 2013 there is a sailing seminar in Corfu, an island in the Ionian sea right by Italy.

Chryssa, Panos, Spyros and Stratis attend. One teaches, the other three are students. The teacher has some experience with the marine market so the students (in the seminar) decide to ask him where to sell these bags that they have been making for the past nine months from discarded and retired sail cloth that they found lying around Marina Gouvia in Corfu. Instead of an answer involving points of sale the students get a business proposal. After a lot of discussion they agree to set up a company that:

  • Upcycles discarded sails, transforming them from thrown away sail cloth into unique, elegantly designed bags and travel accessories, giving them new life and new value.
  • Designs them so they can be reused.
  • Handcrafts each Salty Bag locally.
  • Make sure that each bag is carefully handcrafted with the best materials available. Everywhere possible sourcing from quality driven local manufacturers.
  • Collects the unique stories of each sail. Where it lived, why it was retired, what it saw during it's life. Passing on to it's new owner these stories of races across seas, of quiet coves and starry nights, of pain and overcoming, of storms and the adventures that only a life at sea can offer. They even developed a rule for that: Never design for the sake of the form, design for the sake of the stories.

The Salty Bags have spent many nautical miles before reaching our hands.

All creations are accompanied by a certificate of the story, such as the type of fabric from which it was created, the type of vessel, the lifetime, how many miles it has travelled and what seas it has travelled on. This is a 100% Greek product and part of the proceeds from sales go to the Greek participation in the Olympic sailors the Rio.

Range includes: Everyday bags, beach bags, iPhone cases & Softbags that have their racing & vessel numbers sewns on them.

Find them in orders@saltybag.gr and Facebook: www.facebook.com / Saltybag

I'm on my way to the Benaki Museum in Athens to go get myself a bag with a story:)
