Italian superstar Elisabetta Canalis bares all for PETA's iconic anti-fur campaign and proudly declares that she'd rather go naked than wear fur.

"I decided to go nude because I think that nudity always creates a big reaction," says Canalis. "These poor animals are electrocuted, skinned alive, drowned, and bludgeoned just for the sake of fashion."

...are these animals our luscious friend Elisabetta refers to, those working under age, under paid, under fed and over "supervised" in Asian sweat shops?

On a lighter note, i also prefer to see Miss Canalis nude rather than in fur ;-)

It doesn't suit us to mention the Asian sweat shops, when one views the stats on imports into SA from Asia, we realize how reliant we as a society have become on this form of cheap production.

Save the animals = a cause that makes us feel good

Sweat shops= big brand media=things I want to wear=no guilt.

And Yes on a lighter note she is magnificent and Peta does an absolutely brilliant job.

All we need now is a fashionable 'Peta' to protect people that are under paid, under age and under fed

I am sure George Clooney (ex bf) has her pinned on his wall:) I think it is great that celebrities align themselves with this cause. There are many injustices taking place in the world. I for one would like to believe that the brands manufacturing in Asia, make sure that the labourers are well looked after. I believe in brand integrity.

Its all too true...

One of the greater problems of the world we live in is that as Beth correctly points out, "there are many injustices taking place in the world", and of course we cannot solve them all. We donate to cause x and y, but surely we can't give to z as well? We give of our time to w, but not enough do it with us. We give and are unsure of how much reaches the end user, but we seek solace in the notion that we did our best.

Perhaps our best needs to be, PRIORITIZATION.

Like on an individual level, the human race cannot be everything to everyone, and the battle against "injustices" is now a full scale war. Perhaps some innocent have to be sacrificed along the way. Perhaps we need to sell a few fur coats, use the money to "teach how to fish". Perhaps we need Elisabetta to not get naked (although she is welcome anytime ;-)), but to adopt and educate 3 hungry children, maybe 6 - she could always encourage good old George to take three himself, in return for those after midnight booty call SMSs.

The point I am trying to make is that although it is laudable that celebs and people in general donate and support causes, the general effort is a lot like bird shot. Its time for some guided missile type intervention.

Without discounting the many great organizations out there, serving the underprivileged. The key problem for me is one! hard work. It is a lot easier for a celeb to go to a Peta shoot, look good and be considered as an activist, than it is actually visit a sweat shop and highlight the injustices committed. This is why I applaud Angelina Jolie.

Paulo, I totally get what you are saying. There are many people out there making a difference. As Socratis intimates, what would make celebs join these causes and give them the visibility they  desperately need? I certainly don't have theses answers, in fact wouldn't know where to begin, other than a few donations that I make. We need a much more active role individually to change things.
