Public Exhibition entitled "A Journey Worth Contemplating"

Elegance Jewellers in collaboration with Sibisi Gallery and Nirox Foundation is hosting the art exhibition of Pitika Ntuli

"I am a soul
whose poems are written
in drops of blood
sculpted from undulating
branches
solid and stone
malleable as metal
my bones are carved
and drawn
from acid rains of depression
yet i rise with undaunted spirit
to capture news and nuances
of hope in my land".

The idea behind “A Journey worth Contemplating” is that individual actions have an impact on the collective. The exhibition examines the interplay between the artists work and the effect that these works have on people who engage with them, both inside and outside the gallery space. In the same way, our individual actions can have an impact on society. Our actions today will also impact on the Earth tomorrow.

Ntuli uses recycled and repurposed “found objects“ to create their works and to create beauty from the debris of society. 

He currently has almost forty works in bone, stone and metal on show at the Nirox Sculpture Park in Johannesburg.

About the artist:

Pitika Ntuli (born 1942, in Springs, Ekurhuleni) is a sculptor, poet, writer, and academic who spent 32 years of his life in exile in Swaziland and the UK. He holds an MFA from the Pratt Institute in New York and an MA in Comparative Industrial Relations and Industrial Sociology. While in exile in the UK he taught at Camberwell College of Art, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, the London College of Printing, Middlesex University and University of East London. Since returning to South Africa he has taught at WITS and UKZN, and is currently Professor Extraordinaire at Tshwane University of Technology.

Pitika Ntuli has exhibited in several individual and group exhibitions in many countries in Europe and in the USA, and has organised numerous international art and cultural events in Britain. His sculptures are in several collections and some of his public sculptures can be found in the Swaziland National Bank, Matsapa International Airport and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lobamba. However until 2010 he had never exhibited in his own country, South Africa.

Pitika Ntuli is an expert in African indigenous knowledge systems. He is a regular political and cultural commentator on SABC 2 every Saturday morning and his column is acknowledged as having increased the audience ratings of Weekend Live. He is a well-known poet and speaker who has been a keynote speaker at numerous high profile events and has read his poetry in many forums in the country and the Region.

About SIBISI Gallery:

Established in March 2012, this boutique art gallery is situated in High Street, Melrose Arch, Johannesburg and owned by entrepreneur, Thandi Sibisi. The gallery aims to promote black artists and to use education to further enhance awareness of art to existing and new markets, locally and globally, in order to contribute to South Africa’s cultural heritage.
