Different Types of Laser Cutting Techniques

Laser cutting can be defined as a process that includes different types of cutting through electrically conductive materials by using an accelerated stream of plasma. The materials that can be seamlessly cut using this widely used process that includes, steel, aluminium, stainless steel, brass and copper. However, this process can also be used to cut other conducive materials as well. There are many reputed companies that offer high quality laser cutting services in Gauteng.

There are different types of laser cutting services available. Some of the important techniques are discussed below:

Various types and techniques of Laser Cutting

The laser cutting technique has been developed over the years and this process is widely used for various types and techniques of laser cutting. There are mainly three types of laser cutting techniques:

1. Gas laser cutting:

Gas laser cutting is most commonly known as Co2 laser cutting where carbon dioxide mixed laser cutting is used. This can be defined as a more viable laser cutting technique.

2. Crystal laser cutting technique:

Crystal laser cutting technique is a process that includes lasers which is made from “neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet” and “neodymium-doped yttrium ortho-vanadate”. These crystals are the part of the solid-state group and they allow extremely high-power laser cutting. This laser cutting technique is used for both metal and non-metallic products. This type of laser cutting has a huge range of applications. They are used in medical, dentistry, military as well as manufacturing industry. However, one of the biggest drawbacks of crystal laser cutting technique is that it is a bit expensive and it has a shorter life expectancy than other laser cutting machines on the market.

3. Fibre laser cutting technique:

This final type of laser cutting technique is often used at SPI lasers where Continuous Wave Fibre Lasers and Pulsed Fibre Lasers are used. In fact, it has some similarities, with the crystal laser cutting process. The foundation laser that is also known as the seed laser produces laser beams which is then enlarged by the glass fibre and the pump diodes. This results in stronger and more stable beam. This can work well in both metals and non-metal objects. This technique can be 100 times stronger than that of the gas laser machine techniques. One of the biggest benefits of the fibre laser cutting technique is that, it is more durable and has much stronger service life than the other two laser cutting techniques. This type of laser cutting technique needs lower maintenance and the replacement parts are also inexpensive.

It is important to have total control of your laser beam to use the technique effectively. You should control the output of the beam heat and the intensity of the beam of your material. The duration of the beam is also important while applying the method. This control allows you to work with a range and it ensures less or no damage.
