100,000 LED lights float down the Sumida River

Supplied by
Panasonic who claim that the balls, which were designed to light up upon contact with water, were in fact 100% solar powered energy, lit up the waters of
 Sumida through central Tokyo, Hotaru.

The 100,000 LED lights illuminating the river have now been labeled “Prayer Stars”, which were made to resemble Hotaru (fireflies). There are many literary references indicating that the Sumida River was in fact home to real fireflies, which were said to gather around clean, running water.

A popular activity in Tokyo (Edo at that time) during the 18th century was to search for these luminous creatures on the banks, but for sad and obvious reasons, fireflies no longer inhabit that area, and now the Tokyo Hotaru festival is part of the city’s “Sumida River’s Rebirth”.
