Life-Size Sand Sculptures-Photography

Striking photography by Cuban artist Liset Castillo.

In my new body of work, “Human Studies,” from 2010, I subvert notions of enduring beauty with life-size images of women sculpted in a labor-intensive process out of sand, which I then photographed before destroying them. I create life-size sand sculptures of models typically found in high-gloss fashion magazines,…

Julien Palast With Skindeep

Another rather talented photographer, known as Julien Palast has taken on the “skindeep” series. What I find rather amazing is the fact that this vivid-image based project silhouettes the beauty of the human form. For her to do this, she shrink-wraps bodies, exposing the contours and curves of male and female figures with the use of vibrant…

Rio Fashion Week: Lenny

Lenny's Spring/Summer 2013 collection brought forth floral tropic prints and dark geometric designs that I really love. A refreshing take to this season’s beachwear, where designs evoked a constant sense of femininity that allowed one look to flow perfectly into the next. Obscure cut outs were incorporated into almost every look, adding sporty styles…

East Cape Blues

Thank you to neofundi and my good friend Socs - a friendship now into its 35th magnificent year - for providing such an amazing platform for me to share some of my thoughts ... and now my music.

So ... emboldened by my friends' positive reaction to my posting of one of our band's songs "My Death" yesterday, today I'm posting the vid of one of our live performances earlier this year. The song's called "East Cape Blues" and was shot exclusively on iPhone and edited on laptop by good…

Fabian Oefner - Iridient

Fabian Oefner a Swiss Photographer has taken the fun from the word “bubble” and explored the art of its bursting aspect. The project was called “iridient”, and it is coaxed through the funnel of a sugar dispenser. The air pockets are immortalized in two states: (1) the moment immediately before and after rupturing and (2) the famous…

How To: Double Plaited Buns

Mystery was the center of Marc Jacobs’ fall 2012 show at New York fashion week. The hairstyles seemed grungy, magical and freaky at the same time, and best of all, the runway secret was revealed backstage. The Jacobs show defied all logic with extravagance…one would think that it was an average updo but we would all be wrong.

Jacobs instructed…

SunshiP

Having blogged intermittently about the 2012 Grahamstown National Arts Festival; and written bits and bobs for the last year about SunshiP - the band I drum in - finally I have something to show my friends in Jozi, most of whom haven't seen me play - in fact all of whom knew me before my exit from Jozi and mid-life existentialism drove me to finally actualise the dream I've had since childhood.

So ...

SunshiP is the band; and "My Death" is the single that appears below. The…

Morning Madam...

Parking outside Scusi at 7.30, the local homeless person says “Morning Madam, I clean your car for you, sparkle sparkle.” Fuck no. No. I don’t need a sparkling car. I can’t be kind, so early in the morning. I yell at him, step over the next homeless guy, dodge the doiley seller, and sit down at my usual table. Good coffee, and I manage to ignore the blind kid selling trinkets. I drink, pay, tip the waiter – double - and leave.

And then back to my car. By this time the car guards are all…
