I love people above all else, to a fault really. I am known to have the rubberiest arm in Joburg and I must confess, it's well deserved; any suggestion to have one more coffee or one more drink or share one more story is usually met with a resounding (immediate) acceptance and lauded as the best idea of the day. Undisputed queen of the last ciggie.
But it has very little to do with the material of my arm and more to do with the fact that I just can’t get enough of people and their stories. I’ll put just about anything on hold, just to squeeze a few more minutes of socialising out of a visit that should have ended an hour ago.
So it makes sense that I love to see people in action – playing music, making art, talking passionately about what matters to them, dancing, laughing, eating and even working. And I hate to see people suffering, especially unnecessarily. This is why the myriad injustices we witness all day every day shout to me that there is just too much wrong with the world we have created. We have taken a bountiful earth and superimposed on it a brutal system where living has to be bought and the odds are always stacked against most ordinary mortals. If what we have designed, and support with the way we live, results in one beggar, it is one too many.
And this is why I need to be surrounded by a posse of creative souls – musicians, poets, artists, sculptors, film makers, writers – they make it beautiful and bearable again
